Holidays and Dementia
Dec 22, 2022The holiday season is upon us, which can lead to a mixed bag of thoughts and feelings.
And while we hope you have “visions of sugar plums dancing in your head”…
You might find yourself thinking about something that leaves you feeling less than jolly...
Like how to make the holidays work when your loved one is living with dementia.
You want to include them in the festivities, but wonder...
"Will it be stressful for them?"
"If it doesn't go well, how will it impact the rest of the family?"
When dementia is involved, doing what you've always done may not be in their best interest.
Deciding what to do and how to go about it can be hard.
So, we're sharing some insight to take into consideration.
A brain affected by dementia doesn't respond well to excessive noise, light, and sound, which means...
Large groups of people, loud music, and long hours can be over-stimulating.
This can turn something they once enjoyed into a disorienting and agitating experience.
With this in mind, we recommend you include them in a modified version of your festivities.
Whether they live at home or in assisted living, consider this:
- Arrange a smaller gathering with a few family members...maybe even one person at a time. Keep the visit short and sweet (sometimes 30 minutes is enough).
- Instead of "conversation only" connections, connect with them through a shared experience, like decorating pre-made cookies, singing holiday songs, or making a simple ornament (remember that your connection with them is more important than the outcome.)
- Help them feel more competent and less anxious by using these communication recommendations. Click Here to Download
We understand the sense of loss you feel when a beloved family member can't participate in the same way.
The good news is you can create a new tradition that will give them a sense of connection and inclusion...
Without the stress and anxiety.
So, make a plan today and enjoy your time together in a new way.
Happy Holidays!
